You’ve got your blog, website, and social media all in a row. Now what do you need? Customers! Whether you’re a brand new startup or an established small business, email marketing is an easy and valuable tool for growing your customer base and nurturing your prospects. That all sounds great – but how are you supposed to grow your email list of friends and family into a five-figure database? Fortunately, we are here to help. Read on for some tips and tricks to hacking the email database game and get your list growing in no time.
Step 1: Opt-In Forms
Let’s get visible
While it may seem obvious, in order to get a fantastic list, you need a visible and effective opt-in form on your website. While many sites have their social media icons in prime position, what’s more effective than a fleeting tweet or post? An e-mail!
The element of surprise
Pop-ups. Who wants a pesky pop-up on their website? Hear me out. Done correctly, you can greatly improve your sign up rate from visitors to your website. Set your pop up to appear once per session and with a delay of 15-45 seconds. If you want your pop-up to be less intrusive, have it appear from the bottom of the screen. Then test out different messaging in your pop-ups and see which is most effective.
Step 2: Value Proposition
What’s in it for me?
Even with the greatest sign up form on the internet, you’re not going to grow your list without showing that your content is worth receiving. Whether you’re offering can’t miss deals and coupons or exclusive and helpful content, make sure this is part of your messaging. Delivering regular and useful content or services is a large part of insuring that you deliver on your value proposition.
Whitepapers, the Internet’s SWAG
Whitepapers are a great way to immediately deliver value to your subscribers in exchange for an email address. These typically take the form of a long form article or e-book with exclusive content and tips not available to your website visitors. While it may sound like a tactic more suited to bloggers or marketers, you can create a whitepaper on just about any subject if you pick the right material that is valuable to your prospective audience.
Step 3: Contests
All I do is win…
You have a lot of options when it comes to contests, so use this to your advantage to gain more email addresses. There are many different ways to run your contest which depend on the type of people you’re trying to attract. What is valuable enough that a prospect will give their email addresses for a chance to win it? To get you started, you can do anything from a trivia contest, a chance to vote on future content, or most commonly a desirable prize.
To maximize the effect of your contest, you want to launch a viral competition where your contest entrants get extra entries for having people sign up from their referral link. The key to this is that the prize needs to be so good and such a perfect fit for your target audience that they are compelled to share the love. Just an Apple Watch won’t cut it. Get creative and think about the kind of prize you would think was worth sharing.
Step 4: Bonus Tips
New kid on the block
Find industry leading sites that will allow you do create guest content for them. They get free content, and you get access to a large audience of potential customers. Just make sure that you get some link-backs and these have your opt-in form in plain view.
Social media guru
Facebook makes it easy to collect email addresses with a simple sign up tab. While this might not be your most effective way of gaining subscribers, you need to have this in place across your social media accounts.
How many emails do you send out a day? All of these are opportunities to gain subscribers. Put a link at the bottom of your email signature compelling recipients to click through and sign up for your list.
